I’m an Assistant Professor of Private Law at Maastricht University Faculty of Law. I’m also a researcher for the Dutch Sectorplan on Globalisation and Law, where I am conducting a multidisciplinary inquiry into answering the question of what makes private actors (e.g. corporations) behave in a more pro-social manner. So far, I’ve got nothing.
When I’m not researching and writing - which is most of the time - I’m serving as the course coordinator for the International Business Law at Maastricht University's Faculty of Law and our School of Business and Economics. Prior to joining the faculty, I briefly worked for Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP in New York City as the Japanese contract attorney (at the very bottom of their food chain). I dealt with competition/anti-trust cases (read: a lot of doc reviews) back then, but my research interests/areas of expertise now are business law, corporate governance matters, and CSR. I’ve interned with the United States Navy JAG Corps at the Naval Yard in Washington D.C., externed at the United States District Court in Minnesota, and trained under the 86th Zen Master, Soryu Masuda, in Kyoto, Japan.
I got my B.A. from New York University, but also studied at Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, and the United States Military Academy at West Point. I have a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School, an International Business Law LL.M. from Tilburg University, and a Ph.D. from Maastricht University. My Doctoral research was on the issue of labor exploitations in the global supply chain. Most importantly, I’m an Aquarius who enjoys pub food (e.g. nachos, buffalo wings).
