the Project @ UM Faculty of Law
The idea is simple: Make small and feasible improvements (kaizen) to make our work suck less. This was an initiative I started as a Faculty Council member at my Uni, and although the examples below are inputs from our staff members, you can just as easily start up your own 10% project at your workplace!! Small things go a long way to help us maintain our sanity (for at least a little bit longer).
Changes Implemented:
Reduced amount of paperwork required for annual assessment.
Extended opening hours of the faculty (select weekends) and also for our faculty café (which closed at 2pm).
Added wall sockets/extension cords in our staff room.
Pushed for transparency in teaching hours/expectations (i.e. publication of guidelines by the Faculty Board).
Got a second microwave in the building.
Added vegetarian/lactose-free options for Faculty Coffee & Cake meetups.
Set up recycling bins specific to cans and bottles eligible for statiegeld. Collect, recycle, and donate money to a charity.
More seating places around the faculty.
Works in Progress:
Ping pong table at the faculty. It’s a quixotic quest, but we’re fighting the good fight.
Adding traffic mirrors and bike ramps by the bike/car entrances.
Get better computers issued by the faculty.
